The AEC (0)853 4x4 Tractor, better known as the Matador, was built from April 1939 until November 1945, with nearly 10,000 built. Weighing 7tons and powered by a 7.7ltr Petrol Engine, (some later vehicles had Diesel), they were designed to tow the 3.7" Anti-Aircraft Gun (see UK102), 5.5" Howitzer & 7.2" Field Gun. In the Western Desert in 1941 they were also used as makeshift Tank Transporters towing the 45ton rated Rodgers Trailer due to shortages of Diamond T980's. Another unusual haul was the Churchill Crocodile Flamethrower Trailers (see UK04) of the 79th. Armoured Division in NW Europe. Fifteen Matadors were assigned to each Crocodile battallion to tow the trailers when the Churchills were being moved by Tank Transporters. This model is of the early "1940" version which saw service with the BEF in Norway, France and Belgium. They also saw service throughout North Africa, Sicily, Italy & in the Far East.
