QF 5.5" Gun Mk.III

QF 5.5" Gun Mk.III / 4.5" Gun Mk.II

This kit contains optional parts to build either the 5.5" or 4.5" Gun.

In the mid thirties, it was decided that a more modern long range gun was required for the counter battery and interdiction role but In 1939 the elderly 6" 26 cwt howitzer was still the most widely weapon used by medium batteries. Delays in the design of the carriage meant that the new 5.5" gun first equipped units in UK in the summer of 1941 and then in North Africa in early 1942. Twenty guns equipped the British and Free French batteries at the decisive battle of El Alamein. It was normally towed by the AEC Matador. As more guns became available they also equipped Canadian, Australian, South African, Polish and Indian regiments. The 5.5 was retained in service after the war and saw extensive action in the Korean War and was still in service with some armies in the early 1980s.

The QF 4.5" Gun Mk.II was designed as a replacement for the aging 60-pounder. It was a long range medium gun designed for the counter battery role and saw extensive use throughout WWII. It equipped a significant proportion of medium regiments in both the British and Canadian army. Originally designed (Mk.I) to be mounted on the 60pdr. 6" Howitzer, the Mk. II was on the new carriage designed for the new 5.5". There were slight differences in the Mk.I and M. II ordnance but maximum range was almost identical. The Mk.II started service in 1941 and served in North Africa, Italy and NW Europe before being withdrawn from field service in 1945.
