Entering service in 1915, a total of 4000 were built before the end of the Great War. It was not until the 1930's that it was updated with pneumatic tyres so that at the outbreak of WW2 it was the most numerous piece of artillery in the arsenal of the British Army. Used by the BEF, approx. 220 were captured by the Germans becoming the 15.2cm Schwere Feldhaubitze 412(e). After the BEF retreat from France they continued in service, mainly for training and Home defence, but were deployed again with effect in the campaigns in North Africa and in Eritrea. In WW2 they were normally towed by Scammell Pioneer R100 artillery tractors (new Milicast model of this vehicle is currently being prepared) but they were also towed by the early pattern AEC Matador. (See kit UK225) .
