Flamethrower tanks had been part of Soviet tank doctrine for many years and had been used in the Finnish campaign mounted in T26 Light Tanks. Both the T34 (OT-34) and the KV's were fitted with the ATO-41 Flamethrower but the KV's carried 5 times as much fuel as its T34 counterpart. Experience in Finland had shown that it was imperative that these tanks should also retain their main armament but in the case of the KV's, as the ATO-41 flamethrower was mounted in the turret beside the MG, the 76.2mm gun had to be replaced with the smaller 45 mm M1932 gun, although cleverly disguised to look like the standard 76 mm gun. (The 45mm barrel was placed inside 76mm tube). They entered service in mid 1942 and were widely used in support of infantry units to overcome bunkers and fixed defensive positions The KV-8S, based on KV-1S, equiped with the improved ATO-42 flamethrower gun entered service in 1943.
