Produced from November 1942 until April 1943, a total of 242 were built plus a further 175 converted from 38(t)'s in 1943. They saw action on all fronts including Tunisia, Italy,the Russian front and in western Europe.

The Marder III Ausf H SdKfz138 mounted the 75mm PaK40 anti-tank gun on a modified Pz.38(t) Ausf. H chassis. Like the first Marder III (SdKfz139), this version still had the engine in the rear of the vehicle but now utilized the fighting compartment of the original gun tank in the centre, thus giving the crew more cover from small arms fire and shell fragments.
