A total of 440 were produced in the 1950s to up-gun units of the Royal Armoured Corps still using Cromwells in response to the fear of the growing Soviet armoured forces in Eastern Europe in the early years of the Cold War. It was no more than a modified Cromwell with the more powerful 20pdr. gun installed in a large but lightly armoured two man turret. Initially designated as the FV4101 Cromwell Heavy AT Gun it was thankfully renamed Charioteer before entering service. Although seeing limited service with the British army, they did see more extensive use with other nations in both Europe (Austria and Finland) and the Middle East. Charioteers saw action in the Middle-East being used by the Lebanon and Jordan and later by the PLO in Palestinian conflict with Israel so extending this vehicles life span from 1952 until 1980.
