A17 Tetrarch Light Tank (Airborne)

A17 Tetrarch Light Tank (Airborne)

The A17 Light Tank Mk.VII "Tetrarch" was developed as a replacement for the Mk.VI Light Tank series entering service in 1940. However, following the BEF experience their role was questioned and resultantly only 177 were built. This 3-man tank had a road speed of 40mph and 28mph cross country.

Also supplied to the Soviets, twelve saw action in British hands for the first time during the seaborne invasion of Vichy held Madagascar in May 1942. Following the development of the Hamilcar Glider, specifically built to carry them, Tetrarchs were used in the Airborne operations on D-Day and in the Rhine crossing. Some also so action with the Russians.
