M3A1 Light Tank with Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

M3A1 Light Tank with Optional External Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

This kit contains optional parts to allow you to build the vehicle with External Auxiliary Fuel Tanks, if desired.

The M3A1 was an improved vehicle with a part welded hull resulting from changes recommended by the British following the desert experience with the M3. The changes included reducing the number of plates on the rear hull from two to one by bevelling the rear plate. A total of 4621 M3A1 series were built. This included 211 with diesel engines, some of which were supplied to the British with the remainder going to Russia under the Lend Lease programme.

They saw wide service with the Soviets and in one famous action, 33 took part in the amphibious landings in Crimea at Ozereika and Stanichka with the 563rd Separate Tank Battalion. The petrol-engine equipped M3A1 saw service with the Americans in Tunisia, Pacific and with British in Burma, Italy and NW Europe.

Amongst the recommendations was the adaptation of fuel tanks that could be jettisoned and many vehicles used in the Pacific and North African campaigns had twin 25 gallon tanks mounted on the rear hull.
