QF 4.5" Howitzer Mk.IP

QF 4.5" Howitzer Mk.IP

Nearly 3500 were built during WWI and supplied to other Empire forces and Allies. Still in service with the BEF; 96 were destroyed or captured by the Germans and redesignated as 11.4cm le FM361(e) and were kept in service until 1943 when their captured ammunition was exhausted. About 370 were still in service in the UK and 80 in Commonwealth forces. They saw combat in N. Africa with British and Australian troops, in Syria with Australian troops, in East Africa with Indian and South African troops and in Malaya with British troops. Surviving guns were removed from frontline units in 1943 and removed from service by 1944 when the ammunition was finally exhausted. Twentyfour were sent by the British to Finland during the Winter War and redesignated as "114 H/18. A further thirty guns were obtained from Spain in July 1940 from Soviet guns supplied to the Republicans during the civil war. The Finns fitted a number of these onto modified BT7's as the BT42 (see Battlefield BFIN01).
