T-28 Command Tank (Model 1934)

T-28 Command Tank (Model 1934)

The T-28 was a multi-turreted design that was among the world's first medium tanks with the prototype completed in 1931. Armed with a 76.2mm main cannon and four x 7.62mm DT machine guns, it was similar in design to the British Vickers Independent tank. The command variant was easily identifiable by its distinctive horseshoe antenna. Designed as an infantry support tank, the T-28 was intended to complement the T-35, but neither proved very successful, although they played a part in the development of Soviet tank design. A total of 503 were manufactured between 1932 to 1941. They saw action in Finland in the Winter War, then the Continuation War and the invasion of Poland. When Germany attacked in June 1941, 411 were available seeing action in the defence of Leningrad and Moscow, but were removed from frontline service in early 1942. Captured T28s were used by Finland, Germany and Hungary.
