M20 Utility Car

M20 Utility Car

This high-speed Utility Car was used in conjunction with the M8 Greyhound Armoured Car by recon units and HQ sections. Introduced in 1943, the M20 was a derivative of the M8 Greyhound series. The main difference between the two vehicles was the absence of a turret and the provision of additional seating and radios which allowed the M20 to be used as an artillery spotter, reconnaissance vehicle, or personnel carrier. Initially designated as the M10 Reconnaissance Car it was renamed M20 so as not to be mistaken for the M10 Tank Destroyer. The M20 was developed in response to the US Army's need for a mobile vehicle that could carry cargo, but also serve in an anti-aircraft role, if. In total around 3,680 M20s were built by the end of the war. Powered by the same Hercules JXD engine as the M8 Greyhound it had an impressive top speed of around 60mph. Armed with the .50cal MG, they usually carried additional infantry weapons such as the M1 Garand, M1 Bazooka, etc. The M20 was well liked by its crews and proved a reliable AFV.
