Terrapin Mk.I 8x8 Amphibious Truck
Powered by twin V8 engines, each operating 4 wheels and the propeller with the steering affected by throttling back on either engine. All 8 wheels were driven but the rear pair only came into use on soft ground or on an upward gradient when emerging from the water and the front wheels when meeting a steep gradient. Speed was 15mph on land and 5mph in water. Approximately 500 of these rugged Amphibious Trucks were built by Morris Commercials as the British equivalent of the American built DUKW, for carrying cargo from ship to beach. Used by the RASC on D-Day in small numbers, later they were extensively deployed by the 79th. Armoured Division in the operations in Scheldt Estuary and later in support of the Canadians at South Beveland where they continued in service after many of the LVTs became unserviceable. Their last major deployment was the Rhine crossing.
