Grant II (M3A5 Lee) (Burma)

Grant II (M3A5 Lee) (Burma)

A total of 591 of the M3A5 variant, which despite having the Lee turret and not the British designed Grant type was referred by the British as the Grant II. With a twin GM 6-71 diesel engine the rear hull was heavily modified. Many were deployed in the Burma campaign and had the MG turret removed.

Following the arrival of the M4 Shermans the British transferred approximately 1,700 M3/M3A5s to the China-Burma-India (CBI) theatre of operations, deploying about 800 M3/M3A5s to Australia and around 900 to Indian forces. British Lees and Grants were used extensively by the British Fourteenth Army from the fall of Rangoon, performing admirably until the end of the war. In the Far East, the M3/M3A5s main task was infantry support, as it was originally designed to do. It played a pivotal role during the Battle of Imphal, during which the Japanese Army's 14th Tank Regiment (consisting of mostly of Type 95 Ha-Go light tanks and captured British M3 Stuart light tanks) encountered M3/M3A5 medium tanks for the first time, and completely outgunned the Japanese armour. Despite their low off-road performance, the M3s performed well in the steep hillsides around Imphal. Although declared obsolete in April 1944, the M3 & M3A5s continued in their infantry support role until the end of the war.
