This set consists of thirtyfive gallon British fuel cans which although larger than the German "Jerrycan", was however clearly influenced, if not directly copied, from the superb German design (see ACC003). These became available in 1944 and adorned, along with the earlier pattern "Flimsies" (ACC.04), all types of British AFV's. The difference in size between the British and American five Gallon Fuel Cans derived from the fact that a US pint is 16 fluid ounces but a British pint was 20 fluid ounces. Resultantly there were 160 fluid ounces in a British Imperial gallon (4.6 litres) and 128 fluid ounces (3.7 litres) in a US gallon. The British Army first saw the German fuel cans during the fighting in Norway in 1940 and immediately saw the advantages of the superior design. Later in 1940, American engineer Paul Pleiss supplied them with one of three he had obtained from Germany in 1939 and subsequently large numbers were captured in North Africa.
