155mm Gun M1 "Long Tom" / 8" Howitzer M1on M1A1 Carriage
This kit has optional parts allowing either the 155mm Gun M1 "Long Tom" / 8" Howitzer M1 to be built.
The Long Tom entered service in December 1942 and saw service on all fronts. At least 100 supplied to British and over 20 to Free French. They were originally towed by Mack NO, but later by M4 High Speed Tractor. They continued in service with the US Army during the Korean war.
The 8" M1 (203mm) Heavy Howitzer was developed from the British 8" Mk. VII howitzer supplied in 1917 during WWI. By 1940 they were outdated and redevelopment of the original gun was undertaken by the Hughes Corporation. Using the same breech mechanism and carriage of the M1 (Long Tom), by 1942 they were ready for mass production with just over 1000 built between 1943 and 1945. With a range of 18,500 yards It was a very fine weapon which was noted for its accuracy. The British received them in 1944 and used the Mack NO2 and Albion CX22 as Prime Movers. They also saw action with the US Army during both WWII and the Korean war.
