The T-28 was a multi-turreted design that was among the world's first medium tanks with the prototype completed in 1931. Armed with a 76.2mm main cannon and four x 7.62mm DT machine guns. Similar in design to the British Vickers Independent tank, which influenced many nations tank design in the inter war period even though only one prototype was manufactured in 1926. Designed as an infantry support tank, intended to break through fortified defences, it was intended to complement the much larger T-35 but neither proved very succesful in combat, although they played their part in the development of Soviet tank design. A total of 503 were manufactured between 1932 to 1941. (See R036 & R038) They first saw action in Finland during the Winter War and in the later Continuation War and later in the invasion of Poland. When the Germans attacked in June 1941 a total of 411 were available and saw action in the first couple of months and principally in the defence of Leningrad and Moscow but were removed from frontline service in early 1942. Seven captured T28's were used by Finns during their defence of Finland and other users of captured vehicles included Germany and Hungary.
