Steyr 1500A Personnel Truck

Between 1941 and 1944 a total of 12450 Steyr 1500A vehicles were built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Steyr, Austria were the workforce also included forced labour from the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp at Gusen, 20 miles from the factory complex. Additionally another 5600 were built by co-producer Auto-Union’s Wanderer factory at Sigmar and by Audi at Zwickau in Germany. Steyr 1500A were produced in three main variants: light trucks, infantry carriers and as the cabriolet-style command version for high ranking officers (designated as Kommandeurwagen Kfz.21). The light trucks, both with pressed steel and Einheits cabs, were mounted with house bodies and were used as ambulances. Originally meant for passenger transport due to its impressive performance over rough terrain, the Steyr 1500A was adopted for use by the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS. Similar in size, weight and appearance to the Mercedes-Benz 1500A, it was more popular with the troops due to its reliability although the air cooled engine 3.5Ltr. V8 engine which developed 86 hp giving a top speed of 60mph on level roads, could be troublesome in the sandy conditions encountered in North Africa.
