When the the Russian KV-1 and T-34's were encountered it was quickly realized that the 37mm Pak36 was now redundant as an Anti-Tank gun. The 5cm PAK38 could do some damage but this used the scare AP40 shot. As was standard German practice, they used any ordnance they deemed usefull, and amongst the booty captured in France were large numbers of the famous "Canon de 75 mle 1897". Resultantly a total of 700 modified 1897 barrels, with a round Solothurn perforated muzzle brake fitted, were mounted on the the readily available PaK38 chassis and supplied to units on the Eastern Front. Although disliked by their crews due to its heavy shot and unstable nature when fired, it could just cope with the Soviet armour. When the PAK40 became available some of these modified barrels were mounted on this chassis too but eventually they were withdrawn from front line service with some sent to France for the Atlantic Wall defences.
