AEC Deacon Armoured Ammunition Carrier
The AEC Mk I Gun Carrier, better known as the Deacon, was an attempt to make the 6pdr. Anti-Tank gun into a Self Propelled Gun by mounting it on an armoured AEC Matador chassis. It was only deployed in the North African campaign from December 1942 until the end of the campaign in 1943 with a total of 175 so converted. It was used against Axis armour in North Africa where wheeled vehicles were just as manoeuvrable as tanks and were credited with their part of the successful action at El Hamma, with the 76th Anti-Tank Regiment, against a German force that included Panzers IIIs. Withdrawn at the end of the North Africa campaign, and not considered suitable for use in Europe, some were converted into the Deacon Armoured Ammunition Carrier to carry either 105mm shells for the M7 Priest units or 25pdr. ammo for Sexton units in NW Europe. The remainder were sold to Turkey in 1943.
