QF 3.7" Mountain (Pack) Howitzer Mk.I (WWII version)

QF 3.7" Mountain (Pack) Howitzer Mk.I (WWII version)

The 3.7" Pack Howitzer dates back to 1917 when it was first used in action in Mesopotamia. It was not declared obsolete until 1960, although it had not been fired in anger by the British Army since World War II. In WWII it equipped Royal Artillery Light and Mountain regiments in the North African Campaign including Tunisia and in the Italian Campaign. Produced in South Africa and India, the Indian Army used them widely during the Burma Campaign. It was also used in the Netherlands and in the fighting in the Ruhr by units originally destined for mountain warfare in Greece. During the Rhine Crossing 12 guns equipped the Mountain Regiment of the 52nd. Infantry Division and fired over 5000 rounds in support of the 7th. Armoured Division. Designed as a mountain gun, it was capable of being broken down for Pack transport by mule although it was usually towed by Jeep. This break down capacity proved very useful in NW Europe where it was known to be man handled and hauled up to the upper floors of buildings to provide close support in urban fighting. The gun was also used by other Commonwealth countries and a lightened version was used briefly by British Airborne formations. A number of examples survive and can be seen in museums in Britain, South Africa, Israel, Greece and in the Vietnam Army Museum in Hanoi which dates from at least one gun supplied to the French after 1945 which was captured by the Viet Minh.
