A total of 440 were produced in the 1950s to up-gun units of the Royal Armoured Corps still using Cromwells in response to the fear of the growing Soviet armoured forces in Eastern Europe in the early years of the Cold War. It was no more than a modified Cromwell with the more powerful 20pdr. gun installed in a large but lightly armoured two man turret.
