Chieftain (FV4201) Mk. 5
Entering service in 1966, the Chieftain was introduced as a replacement for both the Centurion and the Conqueror. At the time, it was considered the most formidable main battle tank in the world. Although heavier than the Centurion at 55 tons, it superior engine and transmission gave it a higher cross-country top speed. The crew of four had better accommodation than in the preceding tanks. The driver sat in a recumbent position and the broader turret provided better comfort for the commander, gunner and loader. The Chieftains main armament was the L11A5 120 mm (4.72 in) gun which became the new NATO standard calibre. Perhaps the most striking feature of the turret was the large infra-red searchlight in an armoured housing on the left side. The Mk.5 entered service in 1970. It was based on the Mk.3/3, but had a new 850 bhp engine and improved NBC protection.
