Originally derived from the WWI French Canon de 155 C modèle 1917 Schneider, which was a license-built in the US until 1939, a new carriage for both the 155 mm howitzer and the 4.5" (120 mm) gun was completed in May 1941 when the Howitzer M1 on the Carriage M1 was standardized. Towed either by the GMC CCKW 352 Truck (kit BA37) or later by the M5 High Speed Tractor (kit US55) they first saw action in 1942 as a medium artillery piece and saw action on fronts thereafter continuing in service with the US Army throughout WW II, the Korean War and also the Vietnam War and indeed is still in service with some armies today. Also mounted on the M24 chassis to produce the M41 Gorilla. (see US60) these saw service in the Korean War. A total of 10,300 M1 Howitzers were built.
