Mack N0 7.5ton 6x6 Prime Mover

Mack N0 7.5ton 6x6 Prime Mover

The Mack NO series was a heavy 11.5ltr-engined, 6x6 cargo truck. It was designed in the 1940s by Mack and was taken into U.S. Army service as an artillery tractor for heavy artillery, with some supplied to the British, Canadian and Free French armies. Development by Mack of an artillery tractor for the U.S. Army, with a payload of 7.5 tonnes to tow the 155mm “Long Tom” field gun and the 8-inch howitzer began in 1940.It had been intended for the 240mm howitzer too, but these were later moved by fully tracked tractors.

Production of the NO-1 commenced in January 1942. The NO-1 was the first in the series of five very similar vehicles and differed from the NO-2 in detail fittings only, plus it had a closed metal cab. 403 Mack NO-2s were delivered in 1943 with a further 1,097 of the NO-3 and NO-6, which differed only marginally from the NO-2, were delivered in 1943 and 1944. The last of the series was the NO-7 model, of which 188 were delivered in 1944 and 362 in 1945.

Supplied through Lend Lease to the British and Canadian Artillery regiments, they were also used by their engineer regiments. The Free French received some and many remained in service for decades with the final units sold by the BOAR in the 1980s.
