FV3705 Giant Viper Mine Clearance Trailer

FV3705 Giant Viper Mine Clearance Trailer

This specially designed trailer carries the Giant Viper Mine Clearance device which is the modern version of the Conger system, deployed for a short time in 1944, but with the stable PE4 high explosive making it a very effective weapon. The Giant Viper is designed to clear a path through minefields approximately the width of a tank. It launches a cluster of eight solid fuel rockets which pull a plastic hose filled with 1500kg of PE4 explosive over the area to be cleared and after landing, and when clear of the launching vehicle, the PE4 is then detonated. Usually the Centurion AVRE is the first vehicle to enter the newly formed gap in the minefield, using it's dozer blade to prepare the route for following vehicles. This early version of Giant Viper can also be towed by the FV432 using a special drawbar. In 2010, The Times reported that "Royal Engineers fired the Python rocket-propelled mine-clearing system for the first time in Afghanistan on Saturday, clearing a suspected IED belt in Nad Ali as part of a major offensive against the Taleban in Helmand province".
