This model represents the fourth production mark of the Centurion now armed with the 20pdr Type B Gun in the extensively revised Mk.3 turret and with numerous and hull improverments including a turret mounted .30 cal Browning MG. They saw action in Egypt during the Suez Crisis. The Centurion, introduced in 1945, was the primary British main battle tank of the post war period. It is widely considered to be one of the most successful post war tank designs, remaining in production into the 1960s, and seeing combat in the front lines into the 1980s. The chassis was also adapted for several other roles, and these have remained in service to this day. Between 1946 and 1962 a total of 4,423 Centurions were produced, consisting of 13 Marks and numerous variants, before being replaced by the Chieftain in British Army use. Development of the tank began in 1943 and manufacture of the Centurion began in January 1945 , six prototypes arriving in Belgium less than a month before the end of hostilities in May 1945. They first saw combat with the British army in the Korean War in support of the UN forces in 1950. The Centurion served in other armies of other nations and saw action in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, where they were very succesful against the US supplied M47 and M48 Patton tanks of the Pakistan army. They also saw action with the Royal Australian Armoured Corps in the Vietnam war. The largest foreign use of the Centurion was Israel where they saw extensive action in the 1967 Six Day War, the 1973 Yom Kippur War and during the 1978 and 1982 invasions of Lebanon. Centurions modified as armoured personnel carriers were also used in Gaza, the West Bank and on the Lebanese border. Other nations who uesd them in action included the Royal Jordanian Land Force who used them first in 1970 to fend off a Syrian incursion and later on the Golan Heights in 1973. South Africa deployed its Centurions in Angola during the South African Border War. It is one of the most widely used tank designs, equipping armies around the world, with some remaining in service until the 1990's and as recently as 2006 the IDF used heavily modified Centurions as APC's and combat engineering vehicles. The South African National Defence Force still employs over 200 Centurions, which were modernised in the 1980s and 2000s as the Olifant.
