Caterpillar D7 Cable-Driven Bulldozer

Caterpillar D7 Cable-Driven Bulldozer

The correct designation for this vehicle is Caterpillar D7 with LeTourneau XD7 Bulldozer. It utilises the LeTourneau R7 Power Control Unit to raise and lower the blade with a cable.

The Caterpillar D7 was first manufactured in 1938 and had a long service life in the U.S. Military. During WW II, the D7 was one of the bulldozers collectively known as "Tractor, Heavy, M1", which included many different variants of D7 as well as dozers produced by other manufacturers. D7s were also supplied to the British and other allies under Lend Lease.

It was powered by a Caterpillar, turbocharged diesel, 4-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 831 ci (13.6-litre) engine which was started with a small 2-cylinder pony engine.

The LeTourneau R7 is seen on many D7s with and without blades. It was used for towing and other activities requiring a power winch.

This variant, XD7 Bulldozer, was often used for the simple duty of clearing abandoned and derelict vehicles off roads to allow units to advance.
