British markings for A17 Tetrarch Light Tank
Used operationally in the invasion of Madagascar and for the D-Day landings in Normandy, a few were also sent to the USSR, who were favourably impressed by the tank. However the thin armour and an excessive workload for the three man crew meant that it fell out of favour and was nver used operationally again, being withdrawn from service at the end of the war. The production figures for the number built vary from between 100 and 177 vehicles built.

Intended as a replacement for the Vickers Light Tank, Mk VI, a combination of problems with the cooling system, and a change in the Army's policy towards the use of light tanks, meant that the Tetrarch was never sent to North Africa as intended and was instead allocated to the reconnaissance units of the Airborne Divisions.
