PzKpfw V Panther Ausf. A (with Zimmerit)

PzKpfw V Panther Ausf. A (with Zimmerit)

The Panther Ausf. A, with Zimmerit, were introduced from September 1943 and saw combat in Russia, Italy and NW Europe where they were the most numerous type encountered, remaining in service until the end of hostilities.

Confusingly the Ausf. A was in fact the second series with 2000 produced between August 1943 and May 1944 and is easily identified from the earlier Ausf. D by the improved Cupola, the elimination of the small ammunition loading hatch and a ball mounted hull MG instead of the box flap MG port. The Ausf. A saw combat in Russia, Italy and NW Europe where they were the most numerous type encountered, remaining in service until the end of hostilities. This vehicle has been given a fine layer of Zimmerit paste, produced by Chemische Werke Zimmer AG, which was layered on the surfaces of AFV's for the purpose of combating magnetically attached anti-tank mines from September 1943 onwards. Ironically the Germans were the only country to use magnetic mines against tanks in large scale numbers. It is interesting to note that Zimmerit was discontinued in October 1944 when it was falsely believed that new Allied projectiles could set it on fire. It was not however removed from existing vehicles with many AFV's still displayed varying patterns of Zimmerit at the end of hostilities.
