Universal Carrier Mk.III
The Universal Carrier was introduced in 1940 in order to standardize the proliferation of different carrier types then in use. Although only one of these earlier types was designated as a Bren Carrier this became the generic name given to this ubiquitous AFV. Nearly 65,000 were built in Britain and Canada and saw action in every theatre. Our Mk.II differs from the Mk.I in having a mixture of welding and rivets, a waterproofed hull, new track valances and different stowage. It was a 1/2 ton heavier and carried an additional crew member (4), but still had a maximum road speed of 30mph. This 11-piece model depicts Mk.III version of the Universal Carrier and includes complete detailed stowage including an optional 2" mortar. Introduced in early 1944 they served on for a number of years and saw combat again in the Korean war.
