AEC were noted manufacturers of truck and bus chassis and also built the Matador 3ton truck also used as an artillery tractor for medium field and heavy anti-aircraft guns. This armoured car, based on the Matador chassis, was developed initially as a private venture and in 1941 was added to the vehicles participating in a parade on Horse Guards Parade in London where it made a favourable impression on Churchill resulting in a full production run. Approximately 120 being built before the Mk.II became available. Fitted with the 2pdr. turret from the Valentine Tank it was a large imposing vehicle. and saw combat in North Africa from late 1942. Following the success of the AEC Mk.I, it was decided to upgrade the vehicle when the new 6pdr. Gun became available. The opportunity was also taken to redesign the hull and to fit an improved diesel engine giving an impresive top speed of 41mph for such a big vehicle. This Mark was designated as the Mk.II and is available in our Battlefiekd range as BB100. Along with the further improved 75mm armed AEC Mk.III (available as BB101) a total of 507 of these later Marks were built and both saw service in Italy and NW Europe. A limited number of Mk.II's were supplied to the Yugoslavian Partizans in 1944. The vehicle remained in service after the end of the war until replaced by the Alvis Saladin. The Lebanese Army used the car at least until 1976.
