This long barrelled 4.5" Gun, which used the M1A1 carriage also used on the 155mm M1 Howitzer, was originally known as a 4.7" Howitzer. It was redesignated as the M1 4.5" in order to use existing British ammunition and as such equipped sixteen US field artillery battalions in the NW Europe where it was employed for corps support, using the M5 High Speed Tractor (kit US55) as prime mover. The gun had good range, nearly five km longer than its 155 mm howitzer sibling, it was however out-ranged by the Long Tom, but this was nearly three times heavier. The 4.5 inch gun was however criticized for its insufficient high explosive power. The shell used was produced from low grade ("19 ton") steel, which necessitated thick walls and resultantly carried about two kg of TNT or substitute, about the same as the 105 mm high explosive shell. A total of 416 were built with it being declared obsolete in September 1945.
