Only two of
these heavy SP's were built by Krupp who initially designed
them for the purposes of destroying heavily fortified
bunkers.
Known to the
crews as "Fat Max", they were allocated to
the 521st Panzerjager Detatchment for the proposed invasion
of Gibralter but following the cancelation of this operation
they were instead attatched to the 3rd. Panzer Division
in Russia where they were used against Soviet armour
were they attained considerable success.
One was destroyed
in action in Russia but the remaining vehicle returned
to Germany in October 1941.
The
model, although much simplified, still retains all of
the original fine detail and has a metal insert in the
barrel for sturdiness.
