Described by
General Eisenhower as the most important weapons of
WWII, this vessel accounted for 92% of US Naval inventory
in 1944 with an astonishing 20,000 built.
With the exception
of the armoured ramp, this prodigious craft was built
entirely of wood and carried a crew of 3 plus either
36 troops or 8,100Lbs of cargo which could often be
a light truck.
Fom late 1943,
these craft saw action on all fronts, from the Solomon
Islands and Luzon, to Normandy where 1,089 were deployed
on D-Day.
